On May 1st the Writers Guild of America (the labor union representing over 11,000 television and film writers in the United States) went on strike after a failure to reach a new labor agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. There are many issues that the WGA felt it necessary to strike over, including securing fair wages and residuals for writers working in content produced for streaming, combating systemic changes that have shrunk the size and duration of the television writers room, and ensuring protections against the use of AI to replace the role of screenwriters. Until a new labor agreement can be reached, no new scripts for television or film will be written and peaceful picket lines will be organized daily outside of major studios. The last WGA strike was held in 2007 and lasted for 100 days.
